Photography has a natural connection to geometry. Both use line, shape, proportion and perspective to build a visual language.

Using that connection, colour planes, talks about instability and uncertainty. The ability to navigate uncertainty, while not allowing it to consume us, is essential in today’s world of big data and mediated perceptions.

These images have no clear reference points. By not providing a fully resolved image, the viewer has a chance to live with uncertainty and determine what it means.

Inspired by Mark Rothko’s Color Field Paintings and Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square, the images were created in my studio using light, colour and experimental in-camera processes.

I am delighted that the City of Ottawa has added colour plane 9 and 12 to their public art collection.
