color planes

Photography has a natural connection to geometry. Both use line, shape, proportion and perspective to build a visual language.

Using that language, colour planes, speaks about instability and uncertainty. The ability to navigate uncertainty, while not allowing it to consume us, is essential in today’s world of big data and mediated perceptions.

With no clear reference points, these images provide the viewer with the chance to live with uncertainty and determine their own meaning.

Inspired by Mark Rothko’s Color Field Paintings and Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square, the images were created in my studio using light, colour and experimental in-camera processes.

I am delighted that the City of Ottawa has acquired colour plane 9 and 12 as part of their public art collection.
