mathēmatica

mathēmatica is a digital, photographic series that references dyscalculia, a condition that affects a person’s ability to understand number-based information and math. In this series, mathematical concepts are re-interpreted as photographs.

It is photographed in black and white, representing the frustration that someone with dyscalculia must feel trying to cope in a world of numbers.

Having worked in STEM since the 1990’s, the number of people who felt comfortable confiding in me just how much they hated math was amazing. Perhaps they sensed empathy. Although I worked in technology, I found math hard. I still do.
